Impact - generated seismic signals on Mars

چکیده
Meteorite impacts will be a key seismic source for probing Mars’ interior during the InSight mission. Maximising data exploitation requires a good understanding of impact-generated seismic ground motions (waves), which has been limited by a lack of observational data and the practical difficulty of replicating relevant martian impact conditions in experiments. The aim of this PhD project is to use numerical impact simulations to advance understanding of impact-generated seismic waves. Using a series of numerical experiments (e.g., Fig.1), we will: quantify the seismic wave signature of metre-scale impacts on Mars; determine the effect of surface properties (regolith, layering and presence of ice) on the seismic signals; provide a synthesis of the scaling of seismic efficiency with impactor and target properties; and compare model results with observed seismic signals. As InSight will land in November 2018, the research timeline will allow us to directly inform analysis of seismic signals recorded during the mission. It will also advance understanding of the environmental consequences of impacts on Earth and the resurfacing of small solar system bodies.

Seismic Data Forecasting: A Sequence Prediction or a Sequence Recognition Task
In this paper, we have tried to predict earthquake events in a cluster of seismic data on pacific ring of fire, using multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS). The model is employed as either a predictor for a sequence prediction task, or a binary classifier for a sequence recognition problem, which could alternatively help to predict an event. Here, we explain that sequence prediction/r...
متن کاملReconstruction of Seismic Signals from Highly Aliased Multichannel Samples by Generalized Matching Pursuit
In this talk I will introduce marine seismic acquisition technologies and focus on solutions to maximize the bandwidth of the measured data. This involves detecting and removing the components of the wavefields that are reflected at the sea surface and that propagate downward: these downgoing reflections, called “ghosts” in literature, interfere with the upgoing wavefield, that is generated by ...
متن کاملSpanish avalanche research : experimental sites and seismic measurements Recherches espagnoles dans le domaine des avalanches : sites expérimentaux et mesures sismiques
Seismic signals generated by avalanches have been studied by the avalanche team of the Universitat de Barcelona since 1994. The aim of the study is to understand the avalanche seismic signals in relation to their sources to obtain information on the avalanche dynamics and hence use seismic measurements for monitoring purposes. To this end, experiments focused on improving the knowledge of seism...
متن کاملThe Statistical Meaning of Kurtosis and Its New Application to Identification of Persons Based on Seismic Signals
This paper presents a new algorithm making use of kurtosis, which is a statistical parameter, to distinguish the seismic signal generated by a person's footsteps from other signals. It is adaptive to any environment and needs no machine study or training. As persons or other targets moving on the ground generate continuous signals in the form of seismic waves, we can separate different targets ...
متن کاملAutomated identification, location, and volume estimation of rockfalls at Piton de la Fournaise volcano
Since the collapse of the Dolomieu crater floor at Piton de la Fournaise Volcano (la Réunion) in 2007, hundreds of seismic signals generated by rockfalls have been recorded daily at the Observatoire Volcanologique du Piton de la Fournaise (OVPF). To study rockfall activity over a long period of time, automated methods are required to process the available continuous seismic records. We present ...
